Agent: To aid in your understanding of Mexico, here are three translated letters sent back to Spain from Mexico.

Year: 1521
Dear King Charles I of Spain,
We have conquered everyone we found here, all 26 million of them, including the Mayans and the Aztecs. After much arguing with my men, we have decided to call this land "New Spain." I had suggested "Hernantown" or "Cortesville," but no one else liked them.

Hernan Cortes, Conqueror of Spain

Year: 1531
Dear King Charles I of Spain,
Hey, it's me again, Cortes, that conquering guy. Just wanted to let you know that there's a new religious icon here in New Spain. No, it's not me (as you might have thought), but Our Lady of Guadalupe.
(signed)
Hernan Cortes, (still) Conqueror of Spain (so there)

Year: 1821
Dear Spain,
After 300 years under your control, we declare ourselves independent. We will now call ourselves Mexico, after an Aztec word. And speaking of "call"... Don't call us, we'll call you.
